Air Liquide (Paris:AI) and Dow have recently announced the renewal of their industrial gas supply agreement in Stade, Lower Saxony, Germany. Known as one of the largest chemical production sites in the area, this agreement solidifies Air Liquide’s commitment to supplying industrial gases under a long-term contract. As part of this partnership, Air Liquide will invest approximately 40 million euros in modernizing their assets, effectively improving operational efficiency and reducing CO(2) emissions.
Modernizing Production Assets for Enhanced Sustainability
Under the renewed agreement, Air Liquide plans to enhance their existing production facilities, which include two Air Separation Units (ASU) and one Partial Oxidation plant (POX). In addition, they will implement a new CO(2) recycling solution that enables circular use of the CO(2) produced. By adopting this environmentally-friendly approach, Air Liquide aims to increase energy efficiency by approximately 15% and reduce emissions by around 15,000 tonnes per year. These efforts will account for 80% of the direct CO(2) emissions at the Air Liquide site. The modernization of these assets is scheduled for completion in 2024. It is worth noting that Air Liquide has been a reliable supplier of industrial gases to Dow in Stade, Germany, for over two decades.
Embracing the Climate Imperative Through Plant Modernization
Emilie Mouren-Renouard, member of Air Liquide’s Executive Committee and Chief Executive Officer of the Europe Industries Hub, emphasized the importance of gradually upgrading existing plants alongside pioneering greenfield projects in order to meet the climate imperative. She stated that as part of the long-term agreement with Dow, Air Liquide has committed to investing approximately 40 million euros in modernizing their assets in Stade. This strategic investment will allow them to implement CO(2) recycling within their production facility, resulting in improved energy efficiency and reduced CO(2) emissions. This initiative aligns with Air Liquide’s ADVANCE strategic plan, which seeks to reduce the group’s carbon emissions by one-third by 2035.
