AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. CEO Adam Aron has reported strong advance ticket sales for two highly anticipated movies, “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.” According to Aron, these films have achieved the 12th and 17th highest same-period U.S. advance ticket sales in AMC’s history. Although he doesn’t expect them to maintain those positions, he believes these numbers highlight the appeal of both the movies and AMC as a whole.
Overview of the Movies
“Barbie,” starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling and produced by Warner Bros. Discovery Inc., is set to hit theaters this Friday alongside “Oppenheimer,” which features Cillian Murphy in the role of Robert Oppenheimer, the atomic-bomb scientist. Both films have generated significant buzz through global marketing campaigns.
Buzzworthy “Barbie” Movie
To further promote the “Barbie” movie, AMC has taken an additional step by ordering 25,000 pink Barbie toy corvettes to sell at their theaters. Aron predicts that these merchandise items will sell out quickly, possibly within the first week or even weekend of release.
Internet Phenomenon: “Barbenheimer”
Last week, AMC announced that 40,000 of its AMC Stubs members had purchased tickets for both “Barbie” and Universal Pictures’ “Oppenheimer” for the same day. This unique occurrence has sparked an internet phenomenon called “Barbenheimer.”
Box Office Expectations
According to Variety, “Barbie” is projected to generate box office revenues of $95 million to $110 million from 4,200 North American theaters during its opening weekend. On the other hand, “Oppenheimer” aims for a $50 million opening weekend from 3,600 cinemas.
With this positive news, AMC’s stock experienced a 0.7% increase on Wednesday.
