A record-breaking Powerball jackpot worth an estimated $1.08 billion has been claimed by a lucky ticket holder in California. This incredible sum of money makes it the sixth largest jackpot in U.S. history and the third largest in Powerball’s history.
The winning numbers for Wednesday night’s drawing were 7, 10, 11, 13, 24 (white balls) and 24 (red Powerball). The California Lottery revealed on Twitter that the winning ticket was sold at Las Palmitas Mini Market in Los Angeles.
With ticket sales exceeding expectations, the jackpot grew from an initial estimate of $1 billion to the final amount of $1.08 billion. This catapulted it from being the seventh largest to the sixth largest lottery jackpot ever won in the United States.
Prize Options: Lump Sum or Incremental Payout
The fortunate winner now has a choice between two payout options. They can opt to receive the full jackpot amount paid out over several years, or they can select a one-time lump sum of $558.1 million, before taxes.
The Game’s Attractive Odds
Despite the seemingly insurmountable odds of 1 in 292.2 million, which make winning such a jackpot highly unlikely, the game continues to entice players with its promise of enormous prizes. In fact, the largest Powerball jackpot to date was a staggering $2.04 billion back in November.
Long Wait for a Jackpot Winner
The previous Powerball jackpot winner was crowned on April 19, with a grand prize of nearly $253 million. Since then, no one had managed to match all the winning numbers until now.
Powerball: A Popular Multi-State Game
Powerball is played by millions of people across 45 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
So, what would you do if you won $1 billion? The possibilities are endless.
