Japanese industrial giant, Itochu, has recently announced a groundbreaking collaboration with engineering firm, Orascom Construction, to develop ammonia bunkering at the strategic location of Egypt’s Suez Canal. This joint venture aims to establish a robust global supply chain for ammonia bunkering, targeting international maritime logistics.
Commitment to Green Shipping
With a focus on decarbonizing international logistics, Itochu plans to take the lead in developing ammonia-fueled ships. The company envisions the implementation of this innovative technology in various vessels, such as bulk carriers and container ships. Recognizing the importance of collaboration, Itochu also aims to work with partners to drive the development of ammonia bunkering hubs and ensure the smooth procurement of ammonia. Furthermore, the company is keen on participating in low carbon and green ammonia production projects.
Expanding Horizons: Ammonia Bunkering in Algeciras
This recent announcement comes on the heels of another landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by Itochu with Peninsula Petroleum, a prominent marine fuels supplier. The objective of this MOU is to jointly develop ammonia bunkering at the Spanish port of Algeciras, fueling the momentum in the adoption of green shipping solutions.
