AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. experienced a significant surge in downloads for its AMC Theatres app on Sunday, setting a new record. This boost was largely attributed to the highly successful opening weekend of the films “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” according to third-party data provided by Apptopia.
According to Apptopia, the app was downloaded approximately 47,000 times on Sunday alone, while the number of daily active users reached a peak of 1.1 million. Additionally, on Saturday, the AMC Theatres app achieved its highest-ever ranking, reaching 29 on the U.S. iOS App Store.
The AMC Theatres app offers various features such as ticket purchasing for AMC shows and access to the AMC Stubs rewards program. It has gained popularity among moviegoers who were eager to watch both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” on the same day, leading to an internet phenomenon known as “Barbenheimer.”
In an official statement on Monday, AMC announced that it had its busiest weekend since 2019, thanks to the success of the aforementioned films. Over 7.8 million moviegoers visited AMC theaters in the U.S. and globally between Thursday and Sunday. This impressive figure represents the largest attendance and admissions revenue for AMC since 2019.
Notably, at its U.S. locations, AMC set a new post-reopening single-day attendance record on Saturday. It was the company’s busiest day since July 2019. Moreover, Saturday also saw the second-highest food and beverage sales at AMC theaters in the U.S.
As a result of Friday’s unexpected court ruling that blocked its stock-conversion plan, AMC’s stock experienced a significant surge of 32.1% on Monday. However, the company’s Preferred Equity APE units faced a slight decline of 2.2% on the same day.
