Virgin Galactic Holdings Inc. achieved a significant milestone yesterday with its first-ever private astronaut spaceflight. This momentous event not only marked the second-youngest person ever to venture into space but also celebrated the first mother-daughter duo to embark on such a journey.
Keisha Schahaff and her 18-year-old daughter, Anastatia Mayers, secured their seats on this extraordinary mission through a draw that raised funds for the nonprofit organization Space for Humanity. Hailing from the Caribbean, Schahaff and Mayers have become the first astronauts from the region to join Virgin Galactic’s ranks.
Also joining them on this momentous flight was 80-year-old Jon Goodwin, an early Virgin Galactic ticket holder and Olympian. As a former canoeist for Great Britain at the 1972 Munich Olympics, Goodwin became not only the first Olympian to venture into space but also the second person with Parkinson’s disease to do so.
This remarkable journey commenced at approximately 11 a.m. Eastern time on Thursday when the VMS Eve mother ship took off from Spaceport America in New Mexico. Just over 20 minutes later, at precisely 11:22 a.m., the VSS Unity spacecraft was released from VMS Eve, entering the vastness of space shortly after. Finally, at 11:38 a.m., the spacecraft gracefully returned to Earth, completing this awe-inspiring experience.
This flight, known as the Galactic 02 mission, embodies Virgin Galactic’s dedication to revolutionizing commercial space travel. It serves as the company’s second commercial spaceflight and its seventh spaceflight overall.
While Virgin Galactic’s stock rose by 1.3% on Thursday and shows promising growth, the company recently reported a net loss for the second quarter. This setback is primarily attributed to increased research and development expenses related to the development of its future fleet.
However, despite any current challenges, Virgin Galactic remains committed to its goal of advancing space exploration. In fact, following the success of the Galactic 02 mission, the company plans to conduct monthly flights in the near future. This steady cadence of spaceflights will undoubtedly pave the way for further advancements in the realm of commercial space travel.
As Virgin Galactic continues its journey towards the stars, it’s clear that we are on the precipice of a new era in space exploration. With each mission, they push humanity’s boundaries and bring us closer to a future where space travel is accessible to all who dream of it.
